Technical details

This network worm infects computers running under Windows. The worm itself is a PE EXE file 57470 bytes in size, written in Visual C++ and packed using UPX. The unpacked file is approximately 116KB in size.

The worm spreads via the Internet as an attachment to infected messages. It sends itself to email addresses harvested from the victim machine.

The worm contains a backdoor, which receives commands via IRC.

Installation

Once launched, the worm copies itself to the Windows system directory as "wincfg32.exe"

%System%\wincfg32.exe

It then registers itself in the Windows system registry, ensuring that the worm is launched each time Windows is rebooted on the victim machine:

[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices]
"Windows Configuration" = "wincfg32.exe"

It also changes the following system registry key in order to block the Shared Access service:

[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess]
"Start" = "4"

It changes a range of keys in the following part of the system registry in order to modify Internet Explorer security settings:

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\3]

Propagation via email

The worm sends itself to email addresses harvested from the Windows address books and files with the following extensions:

adb
asp
cgi
dbx
htm
html
jsp
php
pl
sht
tbb
txt
wab
xml

The worm does not harvest addresses which contain the following text strings:

Remote administration

Net-Worm.Win32.Mytob.bk opens a randomly chosen TCP port on the victim machine in order to connect to IRC channels and listen for commands. This gives the remote malicious user full access to the victim machine via IRC channels, and makes it possible for the remote malicious user to access information on the victim machine, download, launch and delete files.

Other

The worm writes the following text to the "%System%\drivers\etc\hosts" file. This means that the user of the infected machine is unable to access these sites.
